CHAPTER

NINETEEN

He was inside a shipping container. After his eyes had adjusted to the darkness, he was able to better make out his surroundings. Forty feet long, eight feet wide, and eight feet and six inches high. Give or take. The exact measurements weren’t really important, unless you were stuck inside one, then you had all the time in the world to measure everything down to the last inch. Since you had no equipment, the “give or take” part tended to be more…give or take heavy.

His “ground” was a flat sheet of corten steel—or weathering steel—while his sides and ceiling were corrugated. The doors were locked from the outside, making escape impossible. Punching two inches of 14-gauge steel with your fists didn’t do any good. Neither was kicking it or trying to call for help. Not completely soundproof, but it might as well be out there in the open seas.

His captors had been pleasant enough to provide him with elastic joggers and T-shirt in lieu of his old bloodied clothes. There was also a brand-new tatami to sit and sleep on. The six-by-three feet mat, made of a thick straw base and woven cover, was comfortable enough against the hard steel floor but he would have preferred a cushy futon. But what was that saying about beggars not being choosers? They had thrown in a buckwheat pillow but neglected a blanket to help stave off the Pacific Ocean breeze. Fortunately, it was more humid inside the container than cold.

Something about humidity and not the heat blah blah blah.

In the hours—days?—he was unconscious, his captors had done him a big favor and tended to his wounds. The cuts along his arms and legs had been cleaned and bandaged. They had also been nice enough to leave behind a bottle of painkillers and antibiotics. Further proof his attackers wanted him very much alive until he arrived at his eventual destination.

His days were filled with sleeping and pacing, then exercising to keep up his strength. His captors had provided a five gallon bottle of water with a helpful spigot on top. Food came in the the form of twelve civilian MREs inside a plain brown box. Meat, vegetarian, and even coffee. Twelve hundred calories packed into one nice handy bag each. If he were to eat two bags a day that would mean his captors expected to reach their destination within six days. If they thought he would need three meals a day, then just three days before arrival. Given that Chance didn’t think anyone was going to be opening his container anytime soon, he erred on the side of caution and settled on two meals per day. He could afford to be more lenient with the water. Five gallons could easily last a grown adult for fifteen days. And that was only if he drank like a fish.

Escape was the top priority but also impossible. They had placed his container in the middle of a pile, with more weight on top, below, and on his sides.
